PE and Sport

At Monkton Park we believe all children should experience high quality PE and school sport. Our Curriculum is based on the teaching and development of the basic skills:  Agility, Balance and Coordination.  We follow a Multi skills based curriculum from Foundation Stage to Year 2, introducing formal games such as tag rugby, hockey, netball and kwik cricket in KS2.  Alongside games, there is a strong focus on gymnastics, dance and outdoor education & problem solving.  Pupils in year 4 have 3 terms of swimming lessons. Pupils in Y4 and Y6 take part in residential visits.

Staff are trained in the Real PE programme – A fundamental movement skills scheme devised by Ronnie Heath from Create development, and an extension of this, the “Raising the Bar” programme.  Teachers in year 6 also use the “Learn to Compete – Compete to Learn” materials.  These programmes focus not only on the physical development of the child, but their social, cognitive, personal development and health and fitness.

At Monkton Park we have always fostered relationships with coaching organisations.  As a result of the government’s investment in school sport, we are now able to formalise these links and work in partnership with Up & Under Sports and Selina Porter (SSCO Sheldon School).  These coaches will be employed to work alongside teachers 2 days a week, delivering the curriculum.  We strongly believe that a team teaching approach will greatly benefit the children and ensure our teachers also receive professional development remaining skilled and up to date.

An overview of our curriculum is outlined in the table below:

Competition and Sporting Achievements

Monkton Park has a clear competition pathway primarily for pupils in years 5 and 6.  We have regular netball and football fixtures against the other 9 Town primary schools and also take part in the Chippenham Schools Tournament held at Sheldon School each year.  Our netball teams have either won or been runners-up consistently over the past five years.

School Games

The school participates in the Sainsbury’s School Games programme.  We regularly compete in the Netball, Football, Tag Rugby, Cricket and Orienteering events and have qualified for the Level 3 Games in Netball for the last 4 years coming 3rd overall in 2013. We have also qualified for the Level 3 Tag Rugby and consistently reach the semi- finals or finals in other Level 2 competitions. In 2015 we were runners-up in the Level 3 Orienteering competition at the Wiltshire Summer Games.

The government funding will enable us to continue our involvement in these festivals and allow us to broaden the type of events we attend. We will also be able to attend more activities organised by our partner secondary school such Multi skills festivals and Olympic Legacy events.

We encourage all our pupils to participate in competition and regularly take 2 or 3 teams and sometimes whole classes to participate in these events.

The Y6 pupils also take part in the Chippenham Sports Partnership Olympic Legacy Games each year.

Create Schools

We are very excited to announce that we are now working in partnership with Createdevelopment to become a Create hub school for the region. Whilst this will provide support for other schools, it will also enable us to develop our own practice both in the teaching of PE and across all curriculum areas. We will keep you informed of further developments and news of the launch event later this year.
