Wessex Water Treatment Works

We have been learning about the water cycle and on Tuesday 20th November, we went to the sewage treatment works in Trowbridge. After telling Gillian and Alan all the information we knew about the water cycle they showed us something called sewage soup!  Gillian had a bucket of water and that was a model of the drains.  We had to think about all of the things that we did in the morning and how we used water.  There were bits of tea, milk and even cereal!  Then in went the shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste but then things got disgusting as we all go to the toilet in the morning!  Gillian explained that the job of the sewage of the works was to clean all the waste water that we use in our toilets.  It was amazing all the things that get put down a toilet but there are only 3 P's that should go in the toilet.  Can you guess what they are?  We had a quick snack break then went off to look at the treatment works.  We were very lucky as it was not that smelly!  After lunch we carried out an investigation about what happens to 3 different types of paper when they are flushed down the toilet.  We had a really fun day and learned all about how water is cleaned.
